Episode Synopsis: Episode 2

as matthew and isobel settle into a house on the estate doctor's widow isobel immediately finds her views at odds with violet's over the village hospital after she assists dr clarkson in the treatment of a local man with dropsy...

...supports clarkson's proposal to have isobel serve on the hospital board despite violet's protestations while the servants decide to snub the newcomers cora appoints a valet for matthew - a move which infuriates thomas who had hoped for the position himself matthew finds himself uncomfortable with having a manservant and manages to offend his valet alfred molesley until robert explains matthew's new responsibilities to him violet attempts to promote a match between mary and matthew and even isobel and cora appear approving but an insulted mary pours scorn over the idea and reveals to her sisters who she has set her sights on instead meanwhile carson's past catches up with him and gwen appears to have a secret correspondence
