Shakira is a Columbian pop artist born and raised in the town of Baranquilla.
Shakira achieved fame in her native Columbia and in the Spanish speaking world, with her 1995 album 'Pies Descalzos' (the title of which translates as 'Bare Feet').
It wasn't until 2001 that Shakira felt confident enough to record in English. She followed other successful crossover acts Ricky Martin, Selena and Enrique Iglesias onto the world stage. Her first English single "Whenever, Wherever" saw her success achieve new heights and included the memorable couplet "Lucky that my breasts are small and humble, so you don't confuse them with mountains"! The follow-up single 'Underneath Your Clothes', achieved similar levels of critical and commercial success.
Shakira was previously in a relationship with Argentinain political figure Antonio de la Rua. She subsequently embarked on a relationship with Spanish footballer Gerard Pique.
