Bon Iver are an indie-folk band founded by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon in Eau Claire, Wisonconsin.
Justin Vernon started the Bon Iver project after the break-up of his previous band, The Rosebuds. He made the early Bon Iver recordings entirely on his own. He recruited Michael Noyce, Sean Carey, Matthew McCaughan to the project in order to tour the first album.
The band's name is derived from the French phrase bon hiver meaning "good winter".
